‘Turn me on’ brooches at the Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam, The Netherlands - 2007

The first brooches I ever made for the project Rietveld at the Beurs van Berlage, where we were selling multiples. These brooches were on - off buttons of imaginary machines and attached to an etched zinc plate. Once you pinned the brooch on yourself, you became the machine, the series therefore is called ‘Turn me on’. My love for zinc started with this project and it is still my favorite material. The inspiration for the zinc plates and the sawn drawings on them came from photos I made during a walk-around in Budapest. ‘Rietveld naar de Beurs was an initiative of Iris Eichenberg to make us, students, practice to see our pieces travel from the working bench to the public: idea, product, packaging, presentation, selling, meeting your public and talk to them. It was a fantastic experience!
